ROCK BURST - Phenomenon and Triggering agents

ROCK BURST

Rock burst is a case of rock failure in underground that combines suddenness and violence on a sufficiently large scale to endanger openings, equipment and/or personnel. It is manifested by violent fracturing of portion of rock around an underground opening by audible noise usually with fragments of slabs projected from walls, roof or floor. Bursts are the sudden release of elastic strain energy stored in the pillar/rock.

Rock burst is a phenomena that occurs in underground metalliferous mines whereas bump is a phenomena of sudden violent bursting of coal from a pillar or pillars in coal mines.

Bump is characterized by low magnitude compared to rock burst. Rock burst occur when static stress of the underground rock exceeds the static strength.

Triggering agents of rock burst

• Depth

• Strong overlying rock stratum

• Strong floor

• Compressive strength of rock/coal

• Brittleness of rock/coal

• Geological factors

• Environmental factors

• Operational factors

• Improper mining method
