Fire Damp Explosion
Presence of firedamp in air between 5.4% to 14.8% forms an explosive mixture. if suitable source of Ignition is available, the mixture results in fire damp explosion.
Firedamp is most dangerous at 9% (Maximum violence).
the explosion take place according to the equation:-
CH4 + 2( O2 + 4N2) = CO2 + 2H2O + 8N2
Two factors are essential to cause firedamp explosion:-
• Firedamp inflammable explosive proportional mixed with right amount of air should be there.
• A suitable igniting agent should be present.
Prevention from Firedamp Explosion:-
Avoid dangerous accumulation of firedamp.
Avoid source of Ignition of Firedamp.
Proper ventilation.
use Flameproof & Intrinsically safeApparatus to avoid build up of Ignition.
Some Important point:-
Lower inflammable limit of CH4 - 5.4%.or33g/m3(in Air).
Upper inflammable limit of CH4- 14.8%.or100g/m3(in Air).
Nose limit (dangerous Mixture)- 9%.(in Air).
If coal dust particle is present more in Atmosphere then Fire damp can explode at 2%.
The Explosibilty limit of gases can be determined by Le chatelier equation.
